Stories within stories - representation matters
Updated: Sep 9
I wanted to talk a little about the importance of representation in children's books and how not only do we need to include diversity, but we must do it in a way that uplifts every child who will look at the image and leave them looking at a window of new possibilities for themselves. I always like to think of each illustration as a story within a story. When I single out each image, without looking at the text, what story does this illustration tell and is this a story that is in tune with the messages I want my children to receive from the world.
